If you're part of Vancouver's Salsa community, you already know that dancing at Robson Square on Sunday afternoons in the summer is an amazing experience. Many people say it's their favourite dance event of the year with the huge attendance, the great music and the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. What you may not know is the event is expensive to run, and the Robson Square dances rely 100% on donations and sponsorship to survive. For the 2017 season we're running a GoFundMe campaign to meet this year's expenses. Please consider making a donation and help keep Robson Square Salsa going this summer.

Now in its 11th year!
2006-2017

Salsa dancing at Robson Square happens on Sunday afternoons in July and August.

The Summer 2017 season runs for six weeks:
July 9 to August 13

Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square is an annual series of FREE outdoor salsa dances held at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver (since 2006) during the summer months of July and August.

The Summer 2017 season runs for six Sundays:
July 9, 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 13

It's a shorter season this year as the facility needs to accommodate other bookings in the space this summer.

Try the free lesson at 3pm, watch the performances at 5pm, or just check out the social dancing throughout the afternoon and see how much fun it is!

Free Dance Lessons and Dance Shows

At 5pm there is a Dance Show featuring performances by some of Vancouver’s more talented dancers.

NEW THIS YEAR is the After Party at 7pm featuring a different style of music each week (Hustle, West Coast Swing, Kizomba). The after party starts with a Free Dance Lesson at 7pm-7:30pm, followed by dancing until 9.30pm.

If you've never experienced Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square, take a look at this video that perfectly captures the event, by local photographer and videographer Trevor Jansen who dropped by one Sunday a couple years ago and filmed this:

Social Dancing

After the lessons and performances, hundreds of salsa dancers take centre stage doing what they enjoy most, dancing salsa. People of all ages and from all backgrounds join in the fun, celebrating Vancouver’s uniqueness as well as its cultural and ethnic diversity.

Sunday Afternoon Salsa is open to everyone and you are welcome whether you dance every night in the local clubs, are just starting to take lessons, or have only heard about salsa dancing but don't know what all the fuss is about. Join in the fun or just come and watch, Vancouver has plenty of accomplished dancers who love to show off!

Even if you've never danced a day in your life, don't feel shy. Come and try the free lesson, watch the shows, or just check out the social dancing throughout the afternoon and see how much fun it is! There is lots of information available about salsa dance classes and lessons, and many instructors will be there who can answer any questions you may have.

Robson Square is where many people in Vancouver discover salsa for the first time. Here's what one salsa dancer says about Robson Square:

"Just wanted to say thanks to you and the crew for putting on the event. Robson Square is how I got into salsa. I remember walking by on a warm summer night two years ago and seeing all these people stream downstairs. I was stunned to see the square lit up all warm and gold and all these people dancing. I was so jealous that I couldn't dance and that encouraged me to get started. Coming back these last two weekends really made it full circle for me and I want to thank you guys for introducing me to salsa." (Edwin)

About Robson Square Salsa

Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square was created by Stephen and Jennifer Dancey of the Dancey Ballroom and SalsaVancouver.net in partnership with fellow salsa dancer Drew Matlow (co-organizer of the first two seasons).

The first two seasons of dances were held in the summer months of July and August in 2006 and 2007, until Robson Square was closed for renovation prior to the 2010 Olympics.

In 2009, an autumn series of dances was held in September and October to celebrate the re-opening of the revitalized Robson Square prior to the 2010 Olympic Games.

2011 marked the return of Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square with a full season of dances running every Sunday in July and August.

The last four years (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) have been the largest seasons yet with more dancers, more spectators, and more dance shows every year.

A big thank you to the Sunday Afternoon Salsa volunteer event crew who run these events better than we could ourselves. Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square would not be possible without you.

Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square

"Every summer, Stephen and Jennifer Dancey of SalsaVancouver.net and the Dancey Ballroom host these free lessons, along with the help of numerous volunteers and eager newbies. Lessons take place at 3pm on the expanse under Robson Street that is an ice rink in winter. The instruction is followed by demonstrations from some of Vancouver’s hottest dancers: everything from swing and belly dance to rueda and ballroom. The dance floor is open till 7:30pm, so people can shake their hips like Shakira; even people who claim they have two left feet are welcome."
